How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature audi key programming near me sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 read more (with the audi key replacement near me bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). 4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than here normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what we have. 5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues with your car. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
